Riya could feel the key turn in the lock and she heard the familiar click that unbolted the door to her home. She was finally home! Her mind was relaxed and she felt calm as she opened the door.

But, the moment she put her foot inside she felt herself slipping into a dark abyss. Her heart skipped a beat and before she knew it, she was falling down Alice’s Rabbit Hole.

She felt scared, as she descended further down until she felt herself thump upon the ground. “Where am I?”, she thought and was surprised to find herself lying on the floor in her own home.

Home turns Hostile

Riya got up immediately and lunged at the door. She tried to open it but it seemed to have been locked from outside. “What is going on?”, she said out aloud. Not knowing what to do, Riya sat down. She thought she was just tired and had had a hallucination. But then, as if to prove her wrong,

  • The air started to become thin. She couldn’t breathe.

  • As she ran to a window to open it so she could get a breath of fresh air, the temperature started to rise. She started feeling very hot and began to sweat profusely.
  • She switched on the air conditioning and realized, no electricity.
  • She felt really thirsty and went to get a sip of water but, no water.
  • When she thought that she might finally faint, it started raining heavily and flooding the entire place.

Riya was terrified! She started screaming! HELP!!!

Waking up from a nightmare!

Riya found herself on her bed. It had been a nightmare from which she awoke and wondered why it had occurred. She realized that she had been watching this documentary on Climate change before she fell asleep and remembered thinking that it was not her problem and it is not going to affect her.

The Real problem

So many of us like Riya, think that Climate change has nothing to do with us. But what we don’t realize is that, just like our own home, the Earth is our home too. Imagine coming to a home that behaves like a house of horror! Would you still choose to do nothing? The first step is realizing that each of us has a role to play in minimizing the causes of climate change.

What can we do?

If you think your efforts won’t count, your wrong. Each of us needs to play our part and this is how

  • Reduce usage of water, turn off the tap while brushing teeth
  • Reduce use of energy, turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room
  • Plant more trees
  • Reduce usage of cars and promote public transport
  • Reduce travel by flights
  • Eat more local food and cut down on meat.
  • Spread awareness about Climate change and remind people that each one of us matters

All these are small things that matter which we can do to contribute to the efforts to reduce the effects of climate change on our earth. Because we need to remember that,
